Grieving Toddler in the House

We have been telling Lia since she was 2 1/2 that when she turned 3 she would have to get rid of her pacifiers. We did the same thing with Ian and on the day he turned 3 he threw them in the trash. He never asked for them again. Lia decided that she wanted to give her pacifiers to her friend Sophie, our 1 year old neighbor. So, Monday after naps we gathered up all her pacifiers to take over to Sophie. She was so excited and proud of herself and she kept saying that she was a "big girl, not a baby anymore". Well, the "big girl" cried for an hour Monday night. The funny thing was though, she was not screaming at the top of her lungs, it was more of a moaning type cry. Chris said that it sounded like she was grieving the loss of her pacifiers. I felt so bad for her, she sounded so sad. I ended up going upstairs to get her to sleep. I spent about 10 minutes tickling her face and patting her back and when I thought she was out, I got up to leave and she popped up and said she had to go to the bathroom. So we went to the bathroom and then she laid down and went to sleep. Last night before bed she asked if we could go to Sophie's house and get her pacifiers. Of course, I told her no. She cried the same cry as the night before and eventually went to sleep on her own. We will see what happens tonight.

So sad...why can't they be babies forever?!!! Tell Lia that her Mimi is thinking about her and her struggle. Love you! Mom
